A recent Environmental Health News (EHN) network investigation (https://www.ehn.org/bpa-impact-on-human-health-2641134273.html) prominently features Dr. Cheryl Rosenfeld and Dr. Jiude Mao, a research scientist in Dr. Rosenfeld’s laboratory, as well as Drs. Fred vom Saal and Wade Welshons. This investigation highlights a conflict within the Consortium Linking Academic and Regulatory Insights on BPA Toxicity (CLARITY-BPA) program between the FDA scientists and independent investigators. This program was initiated and sponsored by the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the National Toxicology Program (NTP), and the FDA. Fourteen independent investigators, including Dr. Fred vom Saal (Biological Sciences) and Dr. Cheryl Rosenfeld (Biomedical Sciences) from the University of Missouri were selected to participate in this project based on their previous studies and general knowledge of BPA. Dr. vom Saal has collaborated extensively in this area with Dr. Wade Welshons (Biomedical Sciences). Controversially, before all of the data were available through this Consortium Project, the FDA issued a public statement proclaiming the findings from these studies support the safety of BPA. An independent report by the FDA is currently in the works with several of the consortium grantees expressing concern that it does not accurately reflect the data that has already been published. The EHN investigation examines these concerns.
